Professor Achiel Van Cauwenberghe, born on April 9, 1935 in Ghent (Belgium) took both his Master degrees in chemical and electrical engineering in Ghent in 1958 and '61 and a M.S.Engineering degree from Princeton University, USA in 1962. He acquired a Special Doctorate (D.Sc.) in Applied Science from Ghent University in 1965.
In 1969 he became full professor in control engineering and Director of the Automatic Control Laboratory at the University of Gent (Belgium). He was Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (Engineering) from 1982 to '85 and Vice Rector of the same university from 1985 to '89. He is emeritus professor since 1 October 2000.
He was teaching and doing research in automatic control systems theory. His main interests are in process control (chemical, metallurgical, paper and nuclear power), adaptive and predictive control and simulation of dynamic systems. He is author or coauthor of over 150 scientific papers. He was lecturing at many universities abroad and did consulting for several process industries.
Prof. Van Cauwenberghe is a member of several Belgian, American and international Engineering Societies, amongst others the IEEE, ISA, ACM, AIChE as well as BIRA, the Belgian NMO of IFAC, whose president he was from 1975 to 1981. He was president of the IBRA/BIRA Federation (1976-2003). He was chairman of the executive council of Journal A, the Benelux Journal of Automatic Control and has been its chief editor (1980-2002). He was also associate editor of Automatica, the IFAC journal and of the French Journal "Automatique, productique, informatique industrielle".
He was a member or chairman of several IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) committees and was a member of the IFAC Council (1987-1993).
He was also active as member or chairman of many Benelux and European accreditation Committees for engineering education and research.
Prof.dr.ir. A.R. Van Cauwenberghe has been elected as member of the Belgian Royal Academy of ScIences (October 1991). From 1998 till 2003 he was chairman of CAWET (the Flemish Engineering Academy member of BACAS). In 2002-03 he was the president of BACAS (the Belgian Academy Council of Applied Sciences) which represents Belgium in the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS). He is a founding member of EuroCASE (European Council of Applied Sciences and Engineering Academies, Paris) and Board member for many years. In 2005 he was president-elect and in 2006 president of CAETS, Washington D.C.. As such he is also a member of the IAC (InterAcademic Council, Amsterdam).
