Biography

Alberto Quadrio Curzio is President of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and President of the Academy’s Class of Social Sciences and Humanities. From 2009 to July 2015 he was President of the Class of SSH, as well as Vice President of the Academy.  He is Professor Emeritus at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Milan), where he was full Professor of Political Economy (1976-2010) and Dean (1989-2010). In 1977, he founded the Research Centre in Economic Analysis (CRANEC), where he held the position of Director (1977- 2010) and is currently the President of the Scientific Board.

His previous positions include: Professor at the University of Cagliari (1965); full Professor at the University of Bologna (1972), where he was also Dean of the Faculty of Political Science; President of the Italian Economic Association (SIE) and President of the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere. For ten years he acted as representative of the Italian Economists at the National Research Council (CNR).

He is member of various international and national academies: the Royal Economic Society (UK), the Academia Europaea (UK), Accademia delle Scienze dell’Istituto di Bologna, Accademia Pontaniana and Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti. He is member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Financial History, Cambridge University (UK). For the academic year 2010–2011 he was elected Distinguished Academic Visitor at Queens’ College, Cambridge (UK) and also in the same year Visiting Research Fellow of the Centre for Financial analysis & Policy, Judge Business School, Cambridge (UK). Unfortunately new academic duties in Italy prevented him to benefit from these appointments. He is Member or President of the following scientific committees: Fondazione Edison, International Balzan Prize Foundation, Fondazione Centesimus Annus, Casa Editrice Il Mulino.

In 1984 he founded "Economia Politica. Journal of Analytical and Institutional Economics" (first published by Il Mulino and later in 2014 by Springer) and since then has served as its Editor-inChief; he also serves as a member of the Editorial Board of various international journals. He has delivered numerous lectures in Italian and foreign universities and has been an invited speaker at many conferences and seminars in Italy and abroad (Barcelona, Budapest, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Geneva, Istanbul, Kiev, Jakarta, Lisbon, Madrid, Moscow, Beijing, Quebec, Tokyo, Vienna, Washington). 

He has published around 400 scientific works, many of which are in the English language; one of his volumes has also been translated into Chinese. The American Economic Associations electronic bibliography, EconLit, has more than 90 records of articles, essays and volumes written or edited by Alberto Quadrio Curzio. His works have been published in various formats by a number of leading publishing houses (Il Mulino, Oxford University Press, North Holland, Elsevier, Macmillan, Basil Blackwell, Springer Verlag, Harriman House). He has received the Gold Medal from the President of the Italian Republic for his Accomplishments in Science and Culture, the Gold Medal for Science and Culture, the “Ambrogino d’oro” Gold medal from the city of Milan, the title of Cavaliere di Gran Croce dell’Ordine di San Gregorio Magno, granted by His Holiness Pope Francis and 18 other scientific awards.
