The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts was founded in 1861 as the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts with a goal of promoting and uniting the highest scientific, cultural and artistic achievements of all the South Slavs. After the break-up of Yugoslavia, Croatia has become an independent and internationally recognized country, and the Croatian Parliament made a decision to change the name of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts into the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In the new, independent country, the Croatian Academy has continued with all its activities and the international co-operation with numerous academies from Europe and the world and has established new co-operation and participated in founding new international institutions, e.g. All European Academies (ALLEA) and the Global Network of Academies of Sciences (IAP).
