The report of the United Nation Office for Disaster Risk Reduction acknowledges the importance of Science in reducing disaster risks.

In the introduction, Margareta Wahlström, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction asserts that "A resilient planet needs robust science for disaster risk reduction. It is clear from any review of the disaster risk landscape that progress can be made in saving lives, jobs and critical infrastructure by integrating science into both policy making and best practice for disaster management."
